About 150 meters south of Hanoi, Ho Dynasty Citadel was built by Ho Quy Ly in 1397, with a total area of 5234 hectares with many main architectural blocks. This 600-year-old stone citadel made anyone visit to admit its magnificence. It is one of the 21 most prominent and great heritage in the world voted by CNN.
Citadel is built on a map of cos shape near the square. The North-South direction is 870.5 m long, the east-west length is 883.5 m. The four city gates follow the South-North – West-East direction called the Tien – Hau – Ta – Huu gates. Each door is opened in the middle. These gates are built according to the dome-shaped architecture. The stones on the door of the door chiseled the shape of grapefruit.
The front gate is the main gate with three gates. Connected to the South gate, Hoa Nhai paved the road about 2.5 km long toward Nam Giao herd, built in August, 402. The entire city gate and city wall were built from blue limestone slabs, which were carved chiseled, square, neatly stacked together. Stone slabs are 1.5 m long on average, with sheets up to 6 m long, weighing about 24 tons. The total volume of stone used to build about 20,000 m3 and nearly 100,000 m3 of soil is elaborately excavated. The stones stacked on top of each other without adhesives that remain firm for more than 600 years are also ups and downs of history.
The beauty of Ho Dynasty Citadel has impressed many foreign tourists. CNN once praised: “The construction of three months, putting together the stones without using this mortar is an impressive achievement of 15th-century technique.” This is also a special project at two points: First point: The Ho only existed within 7 years in the history of Vietnam. 2nd kite: The Ho Dynasty is completely empty, consisting of only 4 walls surrounding a land area, in addition to no longer long-term buildings, temples inside.
2. Ham Rong Bridge – historical witness
The old Ham Rong Bridge built by France in 1904 is a steel arch bridge with no pillar in the middle. This bridge was destroyed by the Viet Minh in 1946 in a campaign of groundbreaking resistance. In 1962, Ham Rong Bridge has just started construction. Inaugurated on May 19, 1964, the bridge consists of two spans of steel girders, the middle is a railway, the two sides are the road and the pedestrian road.
Ham Rong Bridge holds a very important traffic position as the only railway bridge crossing the Ma River. This is a very famous bridge in the Vietnam War which is the focus of the struggle to destroy and protect the traffic. The United States Air Force constantly raided with very high intensity and with different tactics. The bridge guard units fought hundreds of battles, shooting down more than 100 types of aircraft. Here the Vietnam Air Force shot down 4 American planes. The 228 anti-aircraft artillery regiment defended Ham Rong bridge and shot down 90 planes and was named Hero of the People’s Armed Forces and named Doan Ham Rong.
The position of the bridge is very special, so it is very difficult to get hit by bombs: there are two mountains in the North and South of the bridge (Dragon Mountain and Ngoc Mountain) that block all bombs thrown at the bridge and where the forces Non-protective bridge shot to catch the bombers must fly in a required direction. So in the first US air war against North Vietnam from 1964-1968, many times were severely destroyed but the US Air Force could not bomb the bridge. By 1972 the first attack of the second air war (starting April 16, 1972) the United States applied a smart bomb (laser-controlled bomb) that hit the bridge and totally damaging Ham Rong bridge.
Ham Rong Bridge today becomes an invaluable historical site. This is a place to visit to attract tourists whenever coming to Thanh Hoa city. Students and students often go to the bridge to play and watch the sunset. Activities of traffic are few, mainly primitive vehicles when there are big trucks, trains pass through, the bridges shake very strongly.
Standing from the side of Ham Rong Bridge, one can see the majestic Ma River flowing and the arterial Hoang Long Bridge connecting the two South and North regions and looking at a time of the fire.
